Alcohol is the enemy for good sleep

Updated: Oct 15, 2018

Many of you like to drink a glass of wine or beer after a hard day of work. It sounds interesting and tempting, as it will definitely help you relax and fall asleep faster. However, there are certain cons of alcohol that can cause problems for your sleep. Let's figure it out!

When you drink alcohol right before bedtime, you immediately fall into a deep sleep, skipping REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep). A person who does not consume alcohol before bed goes through at least six to seven REM sleep cycles at night. Therefore, we can conclude that in order to wake up in the morning full of energy, a person must follow healthy habits and get six to seven REM sleep cycles. And if you are an alcohol lover before bed, you will feel exhausted and deprived of any strength in the morning.

During deep sleep, your body tends to restore, but alcohol can interfere with this process. When alcohol starts to leave your body, you can get out of deep sleep and return to the REM phase, this is when you can easily wake up. And in this case, you often wake up after just a few hours of sleep when you drank alcohol beverages.

What's more, alcohol can affect the quality of sleep. It is a diuretic, so it causes your body to shed more fluids. Because of this, you will feel dehydrated and exhausted. Also, when alcohol is in your body during sleep, the muscles in your body are very relaxed, which can lead you to snoring and then to waking up.

Therefore, before you drink a glass of wine before bed, it is good to think about this decision if you do not want to interrupt your deep sleep and feel tired and sleepy in the morning.
